Mumbai-based singer-songwriter Sanjana Devarajan, 22, is best known for her sharp-witted lyrics and catchy melodies. Inspired by bands like The Script, Imagine Dragons and artists like Taylor Swift, Ed Sheeran – Sanjana’s music is a blend of unique and familiar. Her musical journey began as a 6-year-old, learning Carnatic Music; that later discovered Global artists; leading her into the world of Pop. With a passion for songwriting running through her veins from an early age, Sanjana wrote her first song at 13.
Sanjana’s debut four-track EP ‘Mood’ features a visual representation of colors. Each song on the record corresponds to a particular color depicted on the artwork. The EP gained quite the attention and appreciation, with over a thousand listeners and 15 thousand plus streams on Spotify alone; in just four months. She has been interviewed by Red FM – India, W!ZARD Radio – UK, and has been featured on Rolling Stone India, Under25Music, Bombay Binge, amongst others. She has performed at major events like Telly Technical Awards 2018; and has won multiple awards including the ones from Mumbai University. No wonder she has been appreciated by music emperors like Vishal Dadlani and Ehsaan Noorani on social media. Her dream is to make India be heard on the global stage. Maybe the current Hollywood project she’s working on will lead her to her dream destination.
Here is Sanjana Devarajan in a conversation with GOGO Magazine.
1) When did your journey as a musician begin?
I started learning Carnatic music as a 6-year-old and eventually discovered global artists, got inspired and wrote my first song at age 13. That’s how it all began.
2) Which was your first song?
‘Lemonade’ was the first song I released in June 2020; as part of my debut EP – Mood. Lemonade is a conversation of sorts; where I’m talking to myself, seeking help and getting it.
3) Which has been your most memorable live performance?
The time I performed at the Indian Telly Technical Awards 2018. I was one of the only two performers selected for the event. And I had my final Economics paper, the next day! It was a crazy experience.
4) How do you manage investment for your music productions?
I work a day job and balance my musical career accordingly.
5) Who has been your inspiration?
I’ve had many inspirations – Taylor Swift, Imagine Dragons, The Script – to name a few
6) What is the creative process like behind your work?
The process is a rollercoaster of emotions like happiness, frustration, irritation, peace and pleasure!
7) Tell us about your latest track. What was the inspiration behind it?
The last song from my EP ‘mood’ is titled – ‘I May Not Be a Star’. The song is about gratitude and thankfulness. I wrote it when a friend of mine relapsed to cancer. I sadly never got a chance to sing it to him.
8) Which is your most preferred genre?
I don’t know how I feel about labels. I listen to everything from Rap, R&B, Pop to lo-fi, Soul, Rock, etc. It depends on the day.
9) How was life in quarantine?
It has been a crazy ride thus far. I’m glad I was able to put out music. Hopefully the world heals soon.
