Here is Pranab Rath in a conversation with GOGO Magazine.
1) When did your journey as a musician begin?
Since childhood, I have been very fascinated with music, specifically rock music since I discovered it when I was about 10-11 years old. As a kid, I used to mimic singers and I used to pretend that I was playing guitar in my imagination, but I never got a chance to learn music till I finished my 10th standard when my parents promised me a guitar if I scored well on board exams. Then I started learning guitar from youtube and mostly online mediums. It was not until my college 1st year I got to meet other musicians and formed a band and we started performing in various college events all around the country and I learned a lot about music from fellow musicians. When I graduated I wanted to pursue music and I took a little break to understand making and producing music using a computer. Then I moved to Bangalore and got a job as a music producer at Audiokraft Studios and I got to learn a lot from amazing music directors and session musicians in the south Indian music industry. I was recording a set of tracks during that time which I am releasing now one after the other and I am trying to pursue music as a full-time artist now.
2) Which was your first song?
The first song I wrote, I was very young I never recorded it but I recall it was an attempt at making a rock song, now probably if I hear it I wouldn’t want to share it as it did sound horrible. haha. The oldest song I could find that is available online is a song with my band Legacy Shall Fall we used to make heavy metal music. It’s called Jungle Of Vanity.
The first song I released as an individual artist was “SHOR” released in September this year.
3) Which has been your most memorable live performance?
This has to be the show we did at IIT Bombay Mood Indigo. It was an amazing crowd and they were having a great time having massive mosh pits, we got really excited and we were jumping around, I had my guitar on a stand (I loved that guitar) and someone among us knocked it, so it fell and the neck completely broke. so yah little bit bittersweet but most memorable.
4) Who has been your inspiration?
There are a lot of artists I have been inspired by, the first few artists that I loved when I starter exploring music were Bryan Adams, MLTR, Westlife, Cold play. When I was a teenager I loved bands like Linkin Park, Slipknot, Creed, Alterbridge, Guns, and roses, breaking Benjamin. When I was in a band we explored a lot of heavy metal artists and technical progressive music, like Veil of Maya, Polyphia, Novelists, meshuggah, rings of Saturn, black tongue. But from the last couple of years, I have been loving a lot of Indie rock music from artists like Kodaline, seafront, SMYL.
5) Where do you see yourself in the next 5 years?
I hope to flourish as an independent artist having few albums under my belt. I also want to use my experience as a music programmer and get into music direction for films. So basically I want to be making a lot of music and reach more and more people.
6) Which is your most preferred genre?
I love to listen to progressive rock. I enjoy instrumental music with technical and experimental arrangements. But I like to make music that is simple and catchy so that I can reach everyone, make music that people might like and enjoy. I have been working on my songwriting skills and I am trying to express myself better and simpler. My music can be broadly classified as Rock /Pop Rock.
7) Tell us about your latest track.
The Track “Lafzon Mein Gum” is an ode to love and togetherness. The narrative of the song is based on two lovers meeting after a long time. The music arrangement rides on the guitar and acoustic instruments.
8) How was life in quarantine?
I used to stay alone in my flat in Bangalore so it was scary when it started, haha. I couldn’t believe that something like that would happen to the world. I remember keeping the news channels on throughout the day to see the updates on covid. I stayed completely indoors. But then I decided to not waste any time and work on a few tracks. It was a strange but humbling experience. I moved back home in July and decided to start releasing my music so overall I had a pretty busy and productive quarantine.
