Qualcomm’s next-generation flagship processor, the Snapdragon 898, is already on the road. This chip will most likely be the standard for high-end flagship Android smartphones in 2022. Earlier today, Weibo leakster, @DCS released some parameters of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 898 SoC.

According to the report, the Snapdragon 898 SoC will use Samsung’s 4nm manufacturing process. In addition, this chip will use a 1+3+4 three-cluster architecture design. The super-large core is Cortex X2, and the main frequency hit 3.0GHz. Also, the main frequency of the large core is 2.5GHz, and the main frequency of the small core is 1.79GHz. The graphic card is the Adreno 730.

Comparing this chip with its predecessor, the Snapdragon 898’s super-large core frequency is higher. This will inevitably bring about an improvement in performance. However, the high frequency will also inevitably bring high power consumption. If Qualcomm is increasing the frequency, it should have a way to reduce power consumption. If this is not done, the smartphone manufacturers will have a lot of work to do. Whether or not the major smartphone manufacturers can suppress the power consumption of this chip remains to be seen. Recall that it was an uphill task for many manufacturers with the Snapdragon 888.

According to Qualcomm’s past practice, the chip will be official at the Qualcomm Summit in December this year. Furthermore, the Snapdragon 898+ SoC will be official in the second half of 2022. A report shows that Qualcomm it will be manufactured by Samsung. However, the Plus version will TSMC’s 4nm process, perhaps this chip will have a better power consumption control.

Snapdragon 898 GPUfalls behind Exynos 2200 & Bionic A15

Recent information shows the GPU running scores of the Snapdragon 898 on GFXBench. The scores of the GPU include 158.4FPS in the Manhattan 3.1 scene, 112.7FPS in the Aztec ruins (Normal), and 43.1FPS in the Aztec ruins (High).

‌

From the latest exposure, the GPU of the Snapdragon 898 is not as good as Apple A15 and Samsung Exynos 2200 engineering models. The Adreno GPU thermal management stability is better, and the continuous performance output is better than the first two, that is, the frequency reduction under high load is not serious. The Exynos 2200 has shrunk by about 25%, the Apple A15 has shrunk by 35%, and the Snapdragon 898 is currently 20%.

Snapdragon 898

In Manhattan 3.1, Apple A14 currently ranks first with 137FPS, while Snapdragon 888 only has 117FPS. In other words, the initial running score of the Snapdragon 898 GPU suppresses the Bionic A14. Relative to the previous Snapdragon 888, it has an increase of over 35%. In the Aztec Ruins (Normal), Snapdragon 898 is 15% higher than Bionic A14 and 35% higher than Snapdragon 888. It is important to note that there is room for tuning before mass production. Thus, these results are for reference only and they could change at any time.
