Sifar was formed in 2008 when Amit recorded his version of one of his friend Anshul’s songs. Until this point, they had tried finding the right band/ artist for their songs without any success. Anshul loved the music done by Amit and they decided to upload the song along with one of Amit’s songs on the internet. They soon started gathering an audience online. Encouraged by the response, Amit decided to pursue music production professionally and enrolled in a music production course run by renowned music producer and composer Gaurav Dayal at Beatfactory Academy.

After completion of the course, Amit started producing songs again in late 2009. By the end of 2010, Amit and Anshul had, together, written 10 new songs, which Amit had arranged, performed and produced at his home studio. They continued publishing the songs online on their website on a regular basis. Eight of these songs were also published in the popular computer technology magazine Digit’s Annual Issue in December 2010.

Here is Sifar band in a conversation with GOGO Magazine.

1) When did your journey as a band begin and why did you choose the name Sifar?

We started in 2008. For us, Sifar is a never-ending journey of self discovery. Hence the name!

2) Which was your first song?

Roko Na Mujhe: https://sifar.in/track/roko-na-mujhe-2

3) Which has been your most memorable live performance?

It’s really hard to pick just one. Some of the most memorable ones for us have been at IIT Bombay, BITS Pilani Hyderabad, DD House, IIT Patna, IIT Gandhinagar

4) Who has been your inspiration?

We probably don’t have a particular inspiration but over the years we’ve had many. We are inspired by mostly 90s music including bands and artists like Nirvana and Nine Inch Nails, Alice in Chains, Audioslave, Foo Fighters, Green Day, Junoon, Strings, AR Rahman

5) Where do you see yourself in the next 5 years?

Not very different from what we are doing now! I think we are quite content with the opportunity of making and performing music and will continue to do this for years to come!

6) Which is your most preferred genre?

Overall, we’d say just Rock. There are a lot of sub-genres, of course, but we gravitate more towards 90s alternative rock.

7) Tell us about your latest track.

It’s a version of our song Mere Haal Ki: https://sifar.in/track/mere-haal-ki-rewaken

8) Tell us about the journey of Sifar so far.

Interesting journey. One of the main things that we wanted to do right from the start was to be able to record and produce our songs, and it feels great to have been able to do that. It may not seem like a big deal in 2021 but back when we started, it was not a trivial thing to be able to record and produce rock records on your own. After that, it’s all been icing on the cake really. We got to perform at some amazing, top venues all across India, connected with a few thousand people over our music over the years. There have been some incredible musicians who’ve been part of Sifar’s lineup either on stage or in the Studio. That’s.. quite a bit of icing.

9) How was life in quarantine?

Was? We are still quarantining for some more time. It’s been challenging in the usual sense but we are still making music and are ready to start recording the next album soon! Unfortunately, we have decided not to perform live until the pandemic situation is truly under control so that has been a major downside.
