SAARANYA JOHAR – SINGER, SONGWRITER
Saaranya is a singer based out of Mumbai. She started her career at a very young age and has been making music since then.
Here is Saaranya in a conversation with GOGO Magazine.
1) When did your journey as a musician begin?
Even as a 10-year-old kid, listening to music was my favorite pass time. I would take my mom’s iPod and listen to songs for hours. Eventually, I started imitating and trying to sing them and so I started my vocal training when I was 11. A year later, I learned how to play the guitar. Soon after I started writing my own songs. I think I wrote my first song when I was 14, it was crappy of course. I don’t think I even finished it haha. And I officially released my first track in 2019.
2)Tell us more about the experience of expressing your thoughts and feelings through music.
The songwriting part of being a musician is my literal favorite. The best feeling is to be lost in the emotion I’m experiencing at that moment and when the words and melody just flow out of me. I often get chills while writing a song when I read back what I wrote at that moment and just be excited about the direction the song is heading into.
3) Which has been your first track?
My first song is titled “Fly With Me”, a dance-pop track. It was in collaboration with my friend Shashank. I wrote it right after my 12th board. During that time the lockdown had just been enforced so I had plenty of time on my hands to shoot and edit a music video for it with the help of two of my friends.
4) Who has been your inspiration?
When I was 12, I had become obsessed with Taylor Swift. I used to listen to her songs on repeat, and watch her music videos on repeat too. I imitated performing her songs in the mirror as if it were me up there on the stage. Ever since then she has been my main inspiration for songwriting. The other artist I really admire is The Weeknd.
5) Where do you see yourself in the next 5 years?
In the next 5 years, I want to be an established major label artist with a global audience consisting of people who look up to me like I look up to Taylor Swift or The Weeknd. I want to be a source of inspiration for people who also associate my songs with certain memories that are important to them. My main goal is just to be the best I can be and the rest will follow through.
6)How would you describe your music?
My music basically lies in the pop or indie pop genre. I would call my music soothing and relaxing. You can listen to my music after a busy and tiring day and it would bring you a feeling of comfort. At the moment, all my songs display a variety of feelings and vibes. I’m still navigating my way through creating a sound that solely represents me.
7) Which has been your most memorable song or project?
My most memorable song was my first single “Fly With Me.” I made it at the time when there was complete lockdown. But my favorite part of it was shooting the music video with two of my close friends. I wrote the whole script, directed it, and starred in it. While one friend of mine shot it and the other starred in it. That was the most fun and it was also very special to me since it was my first release.
8)What advice would you give to aspiring musicians?
My advice to all musicians is to just do the best that they can do. It doesn’t matter what the others say. If you believe in yourself, do all the right things, and put in your blood, sweat, and tears then anything is possible. So you shouldn’t believe otherwise.
9)Share some of your achievements with the magazine.
I was recently featured in Rolling Stone India magazine for the second time. I have also been featured in the Global Music Space magazine and Flipsyde. Currently, I’m forming a band and we are planning to perform at a few renowned venues so let’s see where that goes.
10)How’s life after the covid-19 pandemic.
At the moment, life has gone back to the way it was before the pandemic. All the restrictions have also been removed so as such there isn’t much difference. In all, the covid-19 pandemic was a journey of personal growth for me so it wasn’t all that bad.
