MUMBAI CITY’S MAIDEN ISL WIN

MUMBAI CITY’S MAIDEN ISL WIN

Mumbai City FC was just the 2nd team in the history of the Indian Super League to top the league table and then lift the ISL title after Bengaluru FC a couple of years earlier. Mumbai City FC was crowned ISL 2020-21 champions as they secured their maiden trophy after defeating ATK Mohun Bagan 2-1 in the final at Fatorda Stadium in Margoa on Saturday.

Sergio Lobera receives his first winner’s medal after leading Mumbai City FC to a fantastic finish in the ISL 2020-21 season. On the other hand, Antonio Habas’s flawless record in the ISL final came to an end as ATK Mohun Bagan ended the season without ever having managed to defeat Lobera’s side. Sergio Lobera’s squad made it two titles in two weeks, becoming just the second team in history to capture the championship since winning the group stage. After a Tiri own goal (29′), Bipin Singh scored the game-winning goal in the 90th minute. Bagan had taken the lead earlier in the half by David Williams (18′).

Mumbai continued to play possession-based football, but it was all about surging ahead for Bagan, who were off to a fast start. In the first quarter, the islanders had over 60% possession, but Bagan had more shots on goal. It was all for the Mariners after that. Kolkata pinned their opponents with a high-pressing game that forced mistakes from the Islanders. A Javier Hernandez free-kick kissed the crossbar, posing the first real challenge for Mumbai. From a close angle, Roy Krishna forced a save from Amrinder Singh.

The Kolkata side broke the deadlock first, putting pressure on Mumbai’s defense. Just outside the box, Krishna dispossessed Ahmed Jahouh and slipped a pass to Williams. The Australian switched to his stronger right foot and hit Amrinder with a powerful shot.

Mumbai has the best chance of winning the game at the hour mark. Arindam blocked Le Fondre’s attempt, but the rebound went to Boumous, who missed the goal with his shot. As Hernandez’s freekick was deflected into his own net by Mohamad Rakip, Bagan had the ball, but the linesman spotted Krishna offside.

After making some excellent saves, Arindam made a critical error that cost his team the championship. Bartholomew Ogbeche ran down a long shot after he struggled to deal with it properly. Bipin received the ball and made no error from close range. After making some excellent saves, Arindam made a critical error that cost his team the championship.
