Walk in the footsteps of the Neolithic ancestors at STONEHENGE – one of the wonders of the world. And the best-known prehistoric monument in Wiltshire, England.

It was built in several stages: the first monument was an early henge monument. It was built about 5000 years ago. The unique stone circle was erected in the late Neolithic period about 2500 BC. In the early Bronze Age many burial mounds were built nearby.

Today, together with Avebury, Stonehenge forms the heart of the World Heritage Site, with a unique concentration of prehistoric monuments. Around 1 million people visit Stonehenge every year.

For centuries, historians and archaeologists have puzzled over the many mysteries of Stonehenge. The monument took Neolithic builders an estimated 1500 years to erect. While many scholars agreed that Stonehenge was once a burial ground.

They have yet to determine what other purposes it served and how a civilization without modern technology – or even the wheel – produced the mighty monument.

Its construction is all the more baffling because, while the sandstone slabs of its outer ring hail from local quarries, Scientists have traced the bluestones that make up its inner ring to Preseli hills in Wales, some 200 miles from where Stonehenge sits on Salisbury Plain.

Ancient burial ground, a place of healing, a venue for important ceremonies or worship, a way to study the stars. Many speculations have been made over the years as to what Stonehenge ultimately was used for, but even in an era where nearly every question can be answered via a quick search into Google, we still don’t know the exact purpose Stonehenge served for the people who built it.

The mystery of just how these stones ended up in perfect architectural symmetry in the middle of the English countryside, long before modern machinery is perhaps what entices so many people to visit this ancient iconic site year after year.

From London, Stonehenge is just a scenic two hours drive and the best way to visit is via a good, old-fashioned day trip.

As Stonehenge is now fenced off, you can no longer go into the circle. Visitors can only walk around the attraction. But it’s worth visiting for the mystery behind it and an excellent and detailed tour.
