“Rome was a poem pressed for service into the city.”- Anatole Broyard
A heady mix of haunting ruins, awe-inspiring art, and vibrant street life, Italy’s hot-blooded capital is one of the world’s most romantic and charismatic city. Rome; the Eternal City is famous for being the home of the ancient Roman Empire, The Seven Hills, La Dolce Vita, The Vatican City, and Three Coins in the Fountain. Rome as a millennia-long center of power, culture, and religion, has exerted a huge influence over the world in its roughly 2800 years of existence.
As one of the few major European cities that escaped World War II relatively unscathed, central Rome remains essentially Renaissance and Baroque in character. The historic center, including numerous religious and public buildings, is listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. The organization has noted it for its unique artistic achievements, remarkable examples of great early Christian basilicas, and is directly and tangibly associated with the history of the origins of the Christian religion.
Rome is, without doubt, one of the most beautiful cities in the world; every year millions of tourists come from around the world to admire the treasures and masterpieces of Roman art and architecture. It is an enchanting city where you will discover a romantic blend of culture and history spiced with a lively street and nightlife. There is a lovely saying about Rome that when it comes to the city, ‘non-Basta Una vita’ – a lifetime is not enough. The Eternal City is built in layers, full of ancient wonders, Renaissance opulence, gorgeous Italian fashion and design, and modern spaces and eateries.
When you enter Rome’s churches, cathedrals, museums, and galleries you will find awe-inspiring paintings and sculptures that cover all the eras and great names of western art. These range from Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel ceiling to frescoes by Raphael and paintings that show the skill of Caravaggio to the glorious fountains of Bernini. A trip to Rome, though, encompasses much more than a stroll through art and architecture. Sipping a coffee or aperitif in street cafes, or enjoying a glass of beer while you take in the vistas from terraces and piazzas are just as much part of the tourist experience in this most romantic of cities.
If you are going to Italy, then don’t miss any chance to visit the beautiful capital. There are direct flights available from India and the currency used is Romanian Leu (1RON=17.15INR). With a mixture of cultures from around the world, Rome has it all. Wander the cobblestone street with gelato in hand, spend some time people watching from the Spanish Steps, and take in all of the stunning architecture the city has to offer.
