‘Once the travel bug bites, there is no known antidote, and I know that I shall be happily infected until the end of my life.’- Michael Palin

Bled is a town in Slovenia, on the east side of Lake Bled. It is a popular destination in Slovenia due to its romantic scenery and access point for Triglav National Park, which offers numerous outdoor adventure opportunities. The town features a little white church on an island in the center of an emerald green mountain lake, with Bled Castle perched high above, amidst the Julian Alps. Though for much of the 20th century Slovenia wasn’t exactly a hotspot for international travelers, the small country is now becoming a premier destination. It’s amazingly beautiful, full of friendly people, fascinating history, and natural wonders. Not surprisingly, it’s one of the continent’s most underrated attractions. Bled is also a winter sports wonderland. During the warm spring and summer months, it’s about as full of old-world charm as most visitors are ever likely to see.

The most recognizable symbol of the island is the Church of the Mother of Godon the lake with a long and diverse history. Amidst the greenery, you can explore interesting island buildings such as the bell tower, curacy and provost’s house, small hermitage, and some other mysterious legendary buildings. The wishing bell is popular among the many visitors who come to the island. When they ring the bell, they recommend themselves to the Mother of God and express their wishes and requests for her to hear them. The most beautiful view of the lake, its island, and the surrounding peaks is from the castle towering over the lake on a cliff. Due to its beauty, it is considered to be one of the loveliest wedding venues in Europe, and it has also been the location of important diplomatic and state protocol meetings. In addition to the picturesque architecture, this 12th-century castle is also home to a museum collection; a castle printing works, where you can learn about traditional manual printing; the castle cellar, where you can bottle wine and seal the bottle with wax; a castle smithy, and a restaurant. In the summer months, you can meet a castle lord or experience an archery tournament.

Yes, it’s every bit as lovely in real life. With its bluish-green lake, picture-postcard church on an islet, a medieval castle clinging to a rocky cliff and some of the highest peaks of the Julian Alps and the Karavanke as backdrops, Bled is Slovenia’s most popular resort, drawing everyone from honeymooners lured by the over-the-top romantic setting to backpackers, who come for the hiking, biking, water-sports and canyoning possibilities.
