Psychological disorder’s you might have without knowing about it

We all feel a little under the weather every now and then.  For some people next morning is a normal day, where some struggle to shake the feeling off.  We sometimes even carelessly make jokes about people being crazy or nuts even though we shouldn’t be doing so. We all have been in our own phases for varying lengths of time which absolutely goes according to different people. All of us have a slight knowledge or at least heard about sorts of mental or psychological illness. But what is our actual understanding of it all? Many people lack the profound knowledge associating with mental health and often relate and limit its understanding to serious malady.

“A mental illness can be defined as a health condition that changes a person’s thinking, feelings, or behaviour (or all three) and that causes the person distress and difficulty in functioning.”

Like many other diseases, mental illnesses can be severe and mild where symptoms vary from person to person. They don’t necessarily appear to be sick especially when it’s on the budding stage which is why people never suspect if anything’s wrong. Not all brain diseases are bracketed as mental illnesses. Disorders such as epilepsy, Parkinson’s disease, autism and multiple sclerosis are brain disorders, but they are considered neurological diseases rather than mental illnesses.

The sole purpose of this writing is to aware people about some of the mental struggle they might be dealing with frequently and brushing it off  in case they are oblivious about the symptoms and lack the understanding of it actually being something more serious that needs medical attention and help.

1) Depression

We hear a lot of people casually talking or joking about being depressed, but what does depression really feel like? It is normal to feel low every once in a while, but regular episodes of breakdowns and being sad all the time affects your daily life and your functioning which is when you know you need help and probably can’t keep on living like that. There are different kinds of depression, ‘clinical depression’ being the most common of them all. You can observe for yourself if you have suddenly lost interest in all the activities, often feels sluggish, agitated, or slowed down physically and mentally, feeling tired all the time, a feeling of being worthless, trouble concentrating or as worse as having suicidal thoughts you definitely need to at least talk to somebody. We often overlook all of these symptoms thinking its triggered by a terrible event and don’t feel the need to see a doctor because we aren’t actually sick, but what we don’t realize is, its shutting our whole system down completely by interfering in our daily functioning. If you’ve been feeling like this for a while now it’s about time you seek medical attention, therapy, medications like antidepressants are helpful. Clinical depression  should be treated soon before it elevates to a long term ‘persistent depressive disorder’.

Change your mindset and normalize seeing a doctor for such conditions. If you’re feeling a certain kind of way you’re normally not supposed to, which pertains to disrupting your whole body mechanism you definitely need to take care of it by a medical point of view.

2) Anxiety

It’s your body’s natural response to stress, everyone gets anxious. A feeling of fear or apprehension about any upcoming event.  But anything extreme is bad for you. If you’re always anxious about every minor thing you have an anxiety disorder. It’s crucial to identify whether you’re just nervous about something or actually keep worrying about everything as soon as the morning you wake up till you go to bed because anxiety can’t be cured you have to live with it your whole life. However,  it can be helped with therapy and medication like prescribed anti-anxiety drugs. Everyone knows what anxiety feels like, and it’s always unpleasant for everybody, but on the bright side, it keeps you motivated and helps you to push through the unattended work. Ordinary anxiety comes and goes normally, whereas in the case of an anxiety disorder the feeling is persistent and keeps reoccurring throughout the day interfering with your daily life. Anxiety is very hard to cope with and if left untreated it can worsen throughout time. The most common form of anxiety is ‘social anxiety disorder’ which is the fear of being judged by others in any kind of social situations so the person tries to avoid any kind of social interaction and prefer isolating themselves which disconnects themselves from the outer world and makes it harder for them to communicate or deal with people in general. You can look for very noticeable symptoms like frequent panic attacks, feeling of butterflies in your stomach, racing heart, thoughts you can’t control, trouble falling asleep and concentrating. Therapy is the most important in case of anxiety. 

A lot of it contributes to a certain degree of ‘existential crisis’. Making a lifestyle change is very important in this condition. Waking up early, exercising, keeping yourself engaged, always working towards the betterment of yourself as an overall character and personality development helps a lot with anxiety. Making yourself feel good and confident so you have one less thing to worry about, practising to keep yourself organized can also help with anxiety. But it’s important and foremost that you must seek help and the much needed medical attention it needs.

3) OCD

OCD stands for an obsessive-compulsive disorder which is when people have frequently occurring unwanted thoughts or obsessions which makes them do something repetitively. The repetitive behaviours can be washing your hands or cleaning too much, or keeping everything organized all the time. Many people who don’t possess OCD  have recurring thoughts or behaviour but it doesn’t interfere the daily life. whereas in the case of people with OCD, the thoughts are persistent and the behavioural patterns are rigid, were not performing those frequently causes great distress. People with OCD have a hard time disengaging themselves from compulsive actions which are time-consuming and cause significant distress and impair social functioning. Obsessions are recurrent thoughts, impulse, unwanted images or scenarios that keep popping in the head causing great disgust or anxiety. Many people do acknowledge the unwanted thoughts are nothing but a product of their brain but the discomfort caused by them can’t be resolved by any logical reasoning.

You may notice yourself obsessing yourself over a fear of getting contaminated, disturbing thoughts, extreme fixation to symmetry or order etc. you may also notice some compulsive behaviours such as excessive cleaning as in hand washing, showering etc., cleaning the house or everything you touch repetitively, always arranging things in a particular symmetry, repeatedly checking locks, switches, always seeking approval etc. As of now, there is no cure for OCD but you can manage your symptoms by therapy, treatment and medications.

4) Borderline personality disorder

It is a personality disorder known to cause severe  mood swings, behavior and can often range from the low points resulting in impulsive actions to the highs of a maniac. People with BPD can experience episodes of anxiety , depression, anger that can last upto few hours to days. They tend to view all the things in extremes such as all good or all bad. Symptoms may include fear of getting abandoned , as to avoid that building rapidly initiating relationships or cutting off somebody in the anticipation of being abandoned, unstable relationship with family, friends etc. ,impulsive and dangerous behaviors, self harming behavior, intense mood swings , feeling lonely and dissociated. Not everyone posses all the mentioned symptoms.

For instance, some people feel intense distress and loneliness over minor separations. The severity of symptoms varies according to the people. BPD  is difficult to treat but therapy and a better quality of life can help to decrease the severity of it.


It stands for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. People with ADHD normally experience  differences in brain development and can find it hard to concentrate, sit still and self control. The kids who develop ADHD might be the inattentive ones in the class who might find it difficult to concentrate, focus and staying on task. They may not be able to remember the details or pay attention to it. they seem absent minded and find difficulty in tasks like reading and learning which may be normal for other kids. Some kids might be on the hyperactive side of the spectrum. They might be fidgety or restless and might act in ways that disrupt others.  Some kids are way too impulsive that they find it hard to wait and act or speak without thinking. Activity, attention and  control and skills develop as the child grows from their parents and teachers, but if your kid is left behind on these compared to the other kids from their class, your kid might just not be a slow learner and needs a thorough diagnosis.

ADHD can be treated if diagnosed early by medicine, behaviour therapy, parent coaching and school support. The right treatment at the right time can help to treat ADHD. Managing attention and self-control can be taught to young kids at school and by their parents. they can even be homeschooled until the symptoms lessen. Parents can help your child to understand ADHD, work with the school and the teachers, and keep track of what your helps your child and raise awareness.

A better quality of life , and avoiding the bad habits such as consumption of alcohol or smoking , sleeping on time, working on yourself, keeping yourself organized and aware enough to know when you need help can tackle many mental health issues all at once. Practice yoga, meditation, exercising and a healthy eating habit in your lifestyle for a better quality life.
