Argentine forward Lionel Messi has won his seventh Ballon d’Or, beating Polish striker Robert Lewandowski and Italian midfielder Jorginho for the top honor. Messi, who moved from Barcelona to Paris St Germain over the late spring, held the renowned honor on Monday, breaking his own record set in 2019 when he won the Ballon d’Or for the 6th time.
The Ballon d’Or was not granted last year as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Messi won his first significant worldwide competition with Argentina in July, helping the country’s public group beat Brazil to lift the Copa America trophy.
“It’s inconceivable to be here once more. Two years prior I thought it was the last time. Winning the Copa America was critical,” Messi, 34, said in the wake of getting the honor in Paris. “Winning the esteemed honor for a record seventh time, the Paris Saint-Germain striker is proceeding to impact the world forever,” the French football club said on Twitter of Messi’s victory.
Portugal’s Christiano Ronaldo came in 6th in the 2021 Ballon d’Or positioning. On the ladies’ side, Alexia Putellas won the Ballon d’Or grant interestingly after an extraordinary season with Barcelona and Spain. She continues in the strides of Ada Hegerberg, who won the debut ladies’ Ballon d’Or in 2018, and United States World Cup star Megan Rapinoe, champ in 2019.
“I’m extremely enthusiastic, it’s an exceptionally unique second,” Putellas said at the Paris function through an interpreter. “I might want to begin by saying thanks to every one of my partners, particularly my current (Barcelona) colleagues. For my purposes, it’s an aggregate achievement.” The award for Putellas is the first time that France Football has ever given the honor to a member of the Barcelona women’s team, FC Barca said in a statement.
“Presently a club symbol and a model for ladies players in the country, she has the third-largest number of appearances for the group (364) and the second greatest unequaled objective count (157),” the club said. Putellas helped Barca win the high pitch and scored 26 objectives in 42 games in general. She got in the Champions League last against Chelsea in Gothenburg.
Her Barcelona and Spain colleague Jennifer Hermoso completed second in the democratic, with Sam Kerr of Chelsea and Australia coming in third. It finishes honors twofold for Putellas, who in August was named player of the year by European football’s administering body UEFA.
