“I knew I was stepping into a remarkable historic place filled with a mesmerizing soul.”

With equal measures of grunge and grace, Athens is a heady mix of ancient history and contemporary cool. It is the capital of Greece with a long history, dating from the first settlement in the Neolithic Age. It is referred to as the cradle of western civilization and the birthplace of democracy. The first known democracy was established in Athens in the 6th century BC under the guidance of Cleisthenes, an Athenian leader.

Athens began as a small, Mycenaean community and grew to become a city that, at its height, epitomized the best of the Greek virtues and enjoyed such prestige that the Spartans refused to sack the city or enslave the citizens, even after Athens’ defeat in the Peloponnesian War. This set a model that would be followed by future conquerors who would defeat Athens but not destroy it.

When Athens entered its golden age; great thinkers, writers, and artists flourished in the city. Herodotus, the ‘father of history’, lived and wrote in Athens. Socrates, the ‘father of philosophy’, taught in the marketplace. Hippocrates, the ‘father of medicine’, practiced there. Many other great people played their part in the city. IT is a perfect destination for a European city break. The city is magnificent! With great street art, incredible food, colorful neighborhoods, and so much history.

Having a history of 3,000 years, Athens, the glorious city, is a monument itself! Besides, It is home to the Acropolis of Athens, one of the top landmarks of the whole world. It does take a stroll in the city center, to dive into the history of Athens. A tour to the temple of the Parthenon, the new Acropolis Museum, the theatre of Herodes Atticus, the Ancient Agora, and many more ancient landmarks will transport you back into the Classical Age.

A trip to this glorious and magnificent city is worth it. You will experience the history in its all true forms like never before. There are direct flights available from India to Athens and the currency used is the Greek Drachma or Euro. It’s a city that should be on every traveler’s bucket list.

Athens is not all about the past. In the multicultural city center, the old coexist in harmony with the modern. A great selection of fashion boutiques, sophisticated restaurants, cool bars, and traditional taverns create a seductive atmosphere. It is a city full of flavors, aromas, interesting people, colors, and surprises.
