Shelley DeHekker is a 26-year-old writer, music festival fanatic, and travel addict so extreme that she decided to ditch her career in entertainment publicity and travel for a living (i.e. she is a flight attendant based in New York City!). So far She had the opportunity to visit 30 countries and 37 states. While she is having to take a break from flying for a little while due to COVID-19, she is still sharing her experiences, insider tips, travel guides, and trip itineraries on her blog, ShelleyIntheSkies.com.
Here is Shelley DeHekker in a conversation with GOGO Magazine.
1) What made you decide to start blogging?
I’ve been a writer all my life, and I’ve also been a passionate traveller. Growing up, I always dreamt of exploring as many places – near and far – as I could. The more I’ve travelled, the more I’ve fallen in love with the lifestyle and profound experiences it provides. Friends and family oftentimes come to me for advice on planning itineraries or choosing destinations. This became particularly apparent after I studied abroad in London in college; I had so many people asking for tips on the best things to see, do, and eat in the city. I was really excited about sharing my experiences so I thought why not funnel that passion into a travel blog? And here we are!
2) How will you describe your style?
I’m more into minimalism (lots of neutrals, clean silhouettes) with thoughtful accessories to add a pop of colour or pattern. I love an all-black outfit, which is very New York, but I’m also influenced by British style. My bangs are definitely my signature!
3) As 90s and 80s fashion are coming back, what are your thoughts about that?
I’m a 90s girl so I’m all aboard! It gives me so much nostalgia.
4) Do you edit your pictures yourself?
Yes! I use Lightroom and ColorStory.
5) Being a blogger and a traveler must be hectic, how do you manage time?
Fortunately, being a flight attendant allows me the opportunity to travel for a living and see places I would probably never get the chance to otherwise. It does require a lot of balance to actively blog (whether that’s writing posts, sharing photos, or creating IG stories about destinations) while travelling, but I find a lot of joy in it when I’m in the groove. I set checklist goals for myself on what I want to achieve each week and that helps keep me on track! Plus I use any downtime I have on the plane to draft articles or edit pictures.
6) Which is the project in your portfolio you’re most proud of?
I think right now the project I’m most proud of is my post, “What to know before visiting Jordan”. It’s my first really comprehensive guide to a specific country, and it took a lot of time and effort to get it done just right. But I think I’m also proud of it because it details a truly magical place that happened to be the last great adventure I went on before the pandemic took over. Thinking about it takes me back to those last few moments of normalcy in 2020, and it’s bliss.
7) As your style is clean and more into classy side, who is your favorite designer?
My all-time favorite designer is Burberry. I’m obsessed with their clean, distinctly British look.
8) As you’re a new blogger, how do you feel blogging about other cities or countries?
International travel is such an important experience that I believe everyone should have the opportunity to do. I hope that my stories and posts can inspire someone to plan a trip somewhere out of the country, or at least teach them something new and enlightening!
9) Where do you see yourself after 5 years?
I would love to move back abroad at some point, so hopefully in 5 years I’ll have already done that – if I’m in the States, I’ll probably be in California (I lived there for 6 years prior to moving to NYC and it has a VERY special place in my heart.) As for the rest of what’s going on, who knows? Definitely still travelling, that’s all I know for sure. 2020 has been such a curveball, it’s changed my perspective on a lot of things and caused me to really re-evaluate my goals. Check back in with me next year and hopefully, I’ll have a clearer answer!
10) Your favorite music concert you attended?
I love live music, so I have a lot of really positive concert memories – it’s one of the things I’ve missed most during the pandemic! Right now though I’d say my top two favourite experiences were Ultra Music Festival 2019 in Miami and Lady Gaga’s Monster Ball Tour!
11) How was life in quarantine?
Being a flight attendant, quarantine was really strange because I had to still physically go to work and travel all around the US while the world was screeching to a halt. It was scary and strange, with a lot of uncertainty and changes to adapt to seemingly daily. But then coming back home to New York City (which was the epicentre in the US), everything was completely shut down. I was afraid to leave my apartment, so it was also scary and incredibly lonely. The biggest positive from quarantine though was the frequent Zoom catch-ups I had with friends and family all around the world, who in normal times I definitely wouldn’t have caught up with so often – and my newfound addiction to Love Island UK (haha!)
