After I finished philosophy at university, I rekindled my love for drawing and took some time out before I started my career as a teacher. I was receiving a lot of interest locally to draw portraits as I shared my work online. This portrait was both taken and drawn by me and it was a pleasure to meet this little girl first to get to know her personality. Drawing photos that had white backgrounds had been something I’d done before this – so the shadows challenged me as an artist but I feel like it was a milestone where I had become more familiar with values.
To build up the values, I used a mixture of graphite powder and pencils, ranging from 5H-9B. There are lots and lots of layers, which I think is the best way to develop value.
I achieved the “fade” effect at the bottom by using a mixture of techniques, such as with a putty rubber and my favorite tool for drawing: cotton buds and wool!
