Santorini is a volcanic island in the Cyclades group of the Greek islands. The place was formed after a large volcanic eruption that created a caldera. Santorini is famous for its amazing views, beautiful sunsets, destination weddings, and an active volcano. The white beach, red beach, and black pebble beach in Kamari are some places that should not be missed. High above, the main villages of Fira and Oia are a snow-drift of white Cycladic houses that line the cliff tops and spill like icy cornices down the terraced rock. And then there are the sunsets, with crowds breaking into applause as the sun disappears below the horizon.
Santorini island is the site of one of the largest volcanic eruptions in the history of mankind: the Minoan eruption which is believed to have led to the downfall of the Minoan civilization. The small island offers a rich variety of landscapes – including beaches, sunsets, and villages. Visit traditional architecture in Mesa Gonia containing the ruins from the 1956 earthquake. Pyrgos is another notable village with its grand old houses, remains of a Venetian castle and several Byzantine churches.
Even if you’ve never been to this Cyclades island in the Aegean Sea, you’d still recognize it immediately – candy-colored houses carved into cliffs, sapphire waters, gleaming white buildings topped with half-spheres the color of a stormy sky. Here you’ll find peace as you roam the black sand beaches or the streets of a provincial village like Imerovigli. Beautiful Oia is world famous for its sunsets, which seem tinted with every shade of an artist’s palette.
If you approach Santorini from the water, it’s hard not to be awed by the sheer cliffs that soar above a turquoise sea, by the fact that you’re sailing in an immense crater of a drowned volcano and that before you lies an island shaped by an ancient eruption cataclysmic beyond imagining.
In peak season, Santorini becomes a playground for the very wealthy, and while this has resulted in some stellar restaurants and superb wineries, the strain on the infrastructure is a concern. Still, there’s relative seclusion found at the island’s ancient sites, on hiking trails, and beneath the waves.
