“Yoking past and future, the city dazzles with its traditional culture and passion for everything new,” Tokyo is Japan’s capital and the world’s most populous metropolis. It mixes the ultramodern and the traditional, from neon-lit skyscrapers to amazing historic places.
Always changing, and with a diverse collection of neighborhoods, no two experiences of the city are the same. Some places feel like a vision from the future, with even taller, sleeker structures popping up; others evoke the past with low-slung wooden buildings and glowing lanterns radiating surprising warmth. Before 1868, Tokyo was known as Edo. A small castle town in the 16th century, Edo became Japan’s political center in 1603.
With the Meiji Restoration of 1868, the emperor and capital moved from Kyoto to Edo, which was renamed Tokyo (‘Eastern Capital’). Today, Tokyo offers a seemingly unlimited choice of shopping, entertainment, culture, and dining to its visitors.
Tokyo has it all- all sorts of excellent and corky museums, grand temples, atmospheric shrines, and lovely gardens. Contrary to common perception, It also offers many attractive green spaces in the city center and with relatively short train rides at its outskirts. It is a city filled with Japanese history, but also modern, futuristic neo-sci-fi streetscapes that make you feel like you’re a part of the Blade Runner movie. Tokyo’s 13.8 million inhabitants are equally proud of its ancient history and culture, as they are of its ultra-modern technology and architecture. If you have any plans to visit Japan, then Tokyo should be in your itinerary. There are one-stop flights available from India to Tokyo and the currency used is Japanese Yen (1JPY=0.71INR). Tokyo has many budget-friendly places for stay and the food scene tops the list. It has a sheer variety of tastes and experiences to offer.
Tokyo is a world unto itself, and it’s an absolute must-see for any traveler. Soak in the traditional Japanese culture, learn about modern life in the city, become a real-life cartoon character, and watch people until your head spins. There’s no place like Tokyo.
