The Decision to Leave

Sakshi Malik, a star in the world of wrestling, announced her retirement in a move that shocked the sports community.

Her decision revealed during a press conference, was not just a personal choice but a powerful statement against the politics overshadowing the sport she loves.

Emotionally placing her shoes on the table, Malik made her protest visible and poignant.

The Trigger: WFI’s New President Election

The catalyst for Malik’s retirement was the election of Sanjay Singh as the president of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI).

Singh is known to be a staunch supporter of BJP MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh.

This election result was contrary to the assurances given to wrestlers, including Malik, who had been part of a two-month-long protest against Brij Bhushan on allegations of sexual harassment.

Protest Against Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh

Malik, along with other wrestlers like Bajrang Punia, had spearheaded the protest against Brij Bhushan. The BJP MP from Kaiserganj, Uttar Pradesh, faced multiple charges of sexual harassment.

The protesting wrestlers met with Sports Minister Anurag Thakur, demanding that no one associated with Brij Bhushan should contest in the WFI elections.

This move came in response to the government’s assurance that Brij Bhushan’s associates would not be in the running.

The Conflict Over WFI Presidential Candidates

The election for the WFI president saw two primary candidates: Brij Bhushan-loyalist Sanjay Singh and former wrestler Anita Sheoran. Bajrang Punia and other wrestlers had no issues with Sheoran, a Commonwealth Games gold medallist, as she was seen as someone who understood the demands of athletes.

However, the election of Sanjay Singh, perceived as Brij Bhushan’s close associate, was a direct contradiction to the wrestlers’ demands and the government’s assurances.

The Significance of Anita Sheoran’s Candidacy

Anita Sheoran’s candidacy was significant not only because she could become the first woman president of the WFI but also because she was reportedly a witness in the sexual harassment cases against Brij Bhushan.

This added layer of complexity to the election and the ongoing struggles within the wrestling community.

Brij Bhushan’s Legal and Political Standing

Brij Bhushan, facing multiple sexual harassment charges and out on bail, was not eligible to contest in the WFI elections, having completed the maximum 12-year term as per the National Sports Code.

He assured that no one from his family would run for the elections, yet the election of Sanjay Singh seemed to represent a continuation of his influence.

Conclusion: A Stand for Change

Sakshi Malik’s retirement is more than just the end of a sports career; it’s a statement against the intertwining of politics and sports.

Her actions highlight the need for transparency, integrity, and athlete-focused leadership in sports governance. Malik’s departure is a call for change, a hope that the sport she loves can one day be free of the shadows cast by political agendas and controversies.
