TWIST IN THE TALE! HERE ARE THE LATEST UPDATES OF SPANISH SUPER CUP

The Supercopa de Espana or the Spanish Super Cup is a competition in which the winners and runners of the League face off against the winners and runners of the Copa del Rey. Launched in 1982, the competition had previously featured just two teams-the holders of La Liga and the champions of the Copa. Usually, it was a two-legged affair, with the eventual winner taking the trophy home.

The current Super Cup Final will be played against Barcelona and Athletic Club, after winning their respective matches against Real Sociedad and Real Madrid respectively. It was Barcelona who faced Real Sociedad, Barcelona were against Real Sociedad without Lionel Messi, so it was left to goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen to provide the heroes and take his team to the final. Ter Stegen made six saves to deny a second goal to Real Sociedad, including a spectacular extra-time effort by Adnan Januzaj.

It felt like a good semi-final, with high pressure and plenty of shots on the goal from two talented attacking teams who kept trying to score. In the first half, Barça had more of the ball and looked better, but on the counter, La Real still threatened and kept Blaugrana alert. At halftime, the game seemed bound for a goalless draw, but Barça made one big play: Martin Braithwaite found Antoine Griezmann inside the box, and the Frenchman played a big cross in the direction of Frenkie De Jong, who headed the opener home.

La Real was really strong for the second half, pressing higher and having more of the ball. They had a big break when Mikel Oyarzabal’s cross hit De Jong’s arm inside the box, and Oyarzabal himself stepped up and scored a penalty to tie the game. If the game wasn’t dramatic enough, the penalty shootout was just as crazy: La Real missed their first three penalties, two of Ter Stegen’s saves, but Barça kept them alive with De Jong and Griezmann’s misses, and it was all down to Barça’s fifth and final penalty. Riqui Puig stepped up confidently, buried the spot-kick, and Barcelona went to the final.

Athletic Bilbao forward Raul Garcia scored twice in a 2-1 win over Real Madrid on Thursday to beat the holders of the Spanish Super Cup and set the final against Barcelona. Iker Muniain was expected to finish third early in the second half, but he missed the goal with a free header and Real’s Asensio hit the woodworks twice before Benzema pulled Real back into contention. The Frenchman’s strike was initially ruled out but was awarded after a review of the VAR. Benzema put the ball back in the net and was offside again, but this time the VAR ruled against him.

Barcelona will be having an upper hand on the upcoming final with Lionel Messi back on the side, this will be a 14th title win in Spanish Super Cup the most by any Spanish side, Real Madrid is the second on the list with 11 titles. The final would be an excellent competition between the two sides and the best team will eventually lift the trophy on Sunday
