So many times one has heard to live in the present, not live in the nostalgia of the past and fantasies of the future, but if we always, always do that, where would hope come from?
“Stop reminiscing about a past relationship, stop day dreaming about your future home, etc. etc….”
We all do it! Don’t we?
What if we actually started living only in the present? How morbid would that be?
Suppose a buisnessman who lost his everything just got in the moment and lived it, how would he ever be able to get back on his feet, or perhaps a country which has just been struck by a high altitude earthquake and witnessed large scale destruction of life and property, what if the entire nation started pining on that and never recovered.
This doesn’t even work for the positive aspects of life.
What if a person became the nation topper in school and stayed happy for that one thing forever, would he ever be able to progress?
Then why do people time and again keep telling us to “live in the present”?
It just doesn’t make sense.
We have to live in the past, present and future simultaneously.
Thinking about how beautiful the past was, knowing that it will happen again,
Working for it in the bad present,
While dreaming of a future, even better than the past,
Similarly,
Considering the past when things went wrong,
Being careful of the mistakes one made,
Not gloating on the success of the present,
Knowing that things may not go as planned in the future, thus treading lightly.
Sometimes, it’s okay to not be in the present.
Sometimes, it’s okay to live in bewonderment of the future, because sometimes one has to look at the bigger picture to keep going.
